The people behind Kismet Essentials strive to enjoy a healthy and beautiful life by using natural products and want to make it easier for you to do the same by providing you with natural alternatives to the everyday products that you are already using.  They focus on the essentials and only include organic, non-GMO and ethically sourced ingredients in their products so you to can feel good about how you are treating both yourself and the environment.  At the same time, they recognize that the products you use need to be effective so the natural ingredients they select are only those that produce real and visible results.

KM sits down with one of the founders, Vancouver-based Erin Josephy, to talk about combining a life-long commitment to self-care with a calling to entrepreneurism.

KM:  Tell us about your path to Kismet Essentials.

EJ:  My parents were small business owners and it was a major influence on me while I was growing up.  I was surrounded by it: I always helped out so I got my first taste of work experience; my dad always talked a lot about business; I saw first-hand that busy time is busy time and you work a lot; and as a family, we got to ride the ups and downs together.  But, what most impacted me was that I could see that they loved their business.  Growing up, I always appreciated this but didn’t know why and now I get it!

I wasn’t planning on going into business, I just randomly fell into running a painting business after discovering that school was not the right path for me, and I loved it.  I was thrown into it and learned as I went.  It was so busy that there was no time to question it, stop and assess or be scared so I just ran with it.  After a few years, I felt like I got what I wanted from that experience and I wanted to learn something different.

I woke up one day and decided to start my own brand.  As for what the brand would be: I knew that I wanted to offer a range of products that I would use myself and that I knew something about.  I had been oil pulling for years, believed in the power of it and was excited about making it more accessible to people.  Kismet Essentials was born and Coco Rinse was our first product.

KM:  You have quite a connection with entrepreneurism!  Any experiences or thoughts you’d like to share?

EJ:  I feel so lucky to be able to do what I do.  I love creating and designing products from start to finish and seeing them come to life.  I have met so many amazing people, stockists and business owners, and it is really cool to be part of something bigger.

No one tells you how hard running your own business is going to be; it’s a lot of work and you’re not always sure it’s going to pay off.  I’ve definitely had to learn to roll with the punches and if something doesn’t work out, just to try to see the lesson and the bright side and move forward.  But the hardest days often feel the best and I just know this is the space where I want to be; it just feels so amazing when someone chooses one of our products to treat themselves or to give to someone they love and I get to be part of that interaction.

KM:  Describe Kismet Essentials products.

EJ:  We believe that Kismet Essentials is a lifestyle and not just products.  Self care in general is so important and some people don’t spend enough time to relax and unwind.  The products are a vessel to get you to take the time to take care of yourself and while the products are great at what they do, it’s how they make you feel that is more important.  We keep things simple by not adding anything that doesn’t need to be there so that you’ll always know what goes into your products and is one less thing to worry about.

KM:  What are you passionate about?

EJ:  My business and travel.  I love love love to travel and am working towards growing and organizing my business in such a way that my passions both work together so I’m not having to put anything on hold.

KM:  What would you be doing if you weren’t running Kismet Essentials?

EJ:  Definitely travelling and working to empowering women.

KM:  Tell us a fun fact about yourself.

EJ:  I have a weird ability to remember numbers, phone numbers, passport numbers, you name it.

KM:  What is your favorite artist or brand?  Why?

EJ:  I look up to a lot of brands, especially in Vancouver.  People in Vancouver are so willing to help and share their stories.  One instance was when we were first starting out, Sonja Chhinji of Woodlot was so generous with her time and advice – it is such a great mindset and we are so appreciative of it.
